Haggai 2:1–9
About a month into rebuilding the temple, the returned exiles grow discouraged as they compare their small, unimpressive work to the former glory of Solomon’s temple. In response, God does not deny their situation but calls them to persevere, grounding their obedience in His abiding presence: “I am with you… My Spirit remains among you”. He reminds them of His covenant faithfulness from the Exodus and assures them that He still rules over the nations, even promising to “shake” them and supply what is needed. Finally, God lifts their eyes beyond the present by promising that the future glory of this house will surpass the former and that He will establish peace (shalom)—a deep, holistic restoration that ultimately points forward to His greater redemptive work.
